To insure that the tutor and teacher have the same purpose for the tutoring session, a lesson plan must be developed by the teacher. An effective written lesson plan includes:
A sample instructional planning form is included here. A completed sample lesson plan is included here. It is important to follow the lesson plan as closely as possible. The teacher developes it with specific goals and objectives in mind. If a child seems to have a problem with a specific task, then it is important to note it, as this may help the teacher when he/she is developing future lesson plans.
Implementation of the lesson plan must be coupled with adequate teacher supervision. This includes time set aside prior to each tutoring activity for the teacher and tutor to prepare together. Evaluation of the tutoring session needs to be done as well. See Lesson 3 on Preparing for Tutoring.
