Unit 8: Introduction to Special Education Programs and Procedures

This unit is designed as a self-study guide to concepts and terminology often associated with special education programs. We believe strongly that it is essential that schools promote the dignity and well-being of all students. Many of the procedures included in special education programs have been established to help assure students receive a fair and appropriate education. Careful study of the contents of this package should both acquaint you with common procedures and provide an explanation of their importance.

Each lesson contains a short discussion of the topic, provides excerpts from state and federal special education laws and rules, and provides one or more study activities. For future reference, a glossary of common terms and additional suggestions for reading have been included with the study materials. A pretest and final review examination also accompany the package. We recommend that you start by taking the pretest. It will provide you with an introduction to the types of questions addressed by this unit. When you have studied the materials and completed the study activities please complete and submit the final test.

Objectives

After completing this unit and its activities the paraeducator should expect to be able to:

  1. Identify reasons why schools are required to provide appropriate service for all students.
