Lesson 4:
Ethical Relationships with the School

Chain of Responsibility

Each school district, and in some cases each building, will have its own chain of responsibility. Special education is unique because it has its own hierarchy. The hierarchy, and the roles and responsibilities of each individual in the hierarchy, should be explained to the paraeducator. If problems arise the paraeducator should contact the supervising teacher about the problem. If the problem isn't resolved, the next step is to contact the special education department chair, or the special education coordinator. If the problem is still not resolved or the paraeducator is not satisfied then he/she should contact the building administrators.

The first rule of thumb is to always contact the person that you have the concern with. Try to work out the problem. If the person is unwilling to resolve the problem, then work through the chain of command until the problem is solved. Ethically, you should always try to work out the problem to the best of your ability before involving coordinators or administrators.

If the problem cannot be solved within the building refer to the Board of Education policy for grievance procedures and the Nebraska Professional Practices Commission.
